Three men were yesterday sent to prison for three years each after they pleaded guilty to a simple larceny charge.
The men – Joseph Evans, Devon Hollingsworth and Colin Sealy – made their appearance before Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
It is alleged that on August 19 at a mining camp in the Upper Mazaruni River they stole two ounces and six penny weight of raw gold, a total value of $300,000 property of Alfro Alphonso. The men pleaded guilty to the charge.
Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that on the day in question, the camp owner, Alphonso, caught the men removing the gold from the camp. They were taken to the police and subsequently admitted to stealing the items.
The three men told the court that they have been employed by the virtual complainant for the past three years. One of the men, Devon Hollingsworth, told the magistrate that he was the mastermind.
