BILL COTTON/REFORM…CURRY FESTA!!
Who needs the Mohamed event mountain at Providence today? Bill has been to the real CURRY Festa. Peg-A-Suss last Wednesday night.
A great number of movers and shakers in Guyana attended. Le tout Guyane Indinee was there. Bill had fun. But then he always does.
As the hors d’oeuvres, a serious session to celebrate the great Yesu Persaud getting an honorary doctorate from Warwick University. Bill was there in Coventry and in Georgetown to celebrate with him.
Yesu deserves the highest honours. He is, well, such a simple and nice man. As many of the speakers said he always makes you feel special. Pint Sized Professor David Dabydeen, fresh off a Barbados plane, was the emcee introducing a stellar cast paying homage to Yesu: Bishop
George, Doodnauth Persaud, Joe Singh, Komal Samaroo among the eulogists.
The audience equally glittering – at least three Presidents in waiting Naga, Ralph and Khemraj, and also good to see Clifford Reis, Robert Persaud, Manzoor Nadir (sans cat), Walter Ramsahoye, Stanley (No longer Reform) Ming, Glenn Lall (my new hero) and the writer formally known as Freddie Kissoon (I keep seeing his image everywhere…) there holding court. The encomiums were great, the El Dorado five-year-old afterwards even better.
Now you’d think Bill would be satiated after that galaxy of stars. No way!! .He then went poolside to the Indian Night. Curry-Festa. The names on the table reflected the good and great Indo-Guyanese Families. The joint was humming. Beautiful women dancing on a stage put up to hide the toilets.
Anybody who was anybody was poolside .The great Frank Anthony himself – already looking baggy eyed, Mr CGx, my old mucker His Honour Jainarine (‘156 murder cases’) Singh – enjoy life after the Bench Jai., Her Majesty’s High Commissioner to Guyana, Fraser Wheeler and wife, whose peace was broken by a posse of local luminaries and one CN Sharma. You see Bill said the movers and shakers were there but he hears CN ain’t moving or shaking much these days. Great company, great ambience great curry to eat. A Little bit of the motherland at the Peg for the night.
Bill went away with a spring in his step, a hope in his heart and a full stomach. Everything after that even Paloma’s Celegacy or Celibacy or whatever she call it will be an anti-climax.
