DEAR EDITOR,
It was indeed an amazing first half of the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing, China.
I have seen records broken, new ones posted, disappointments, tears being shed, drug cheats recalled home, and it’s just part of what the games are all about.
The one athlete, I believe, that has towered during the first half is none other than the American swimmer Michael Phelps.
To gain eight gold medals at one staging of the Olympic Games, and breaking a 36-year record in the process, is an extraordinary accomplishment that will not be erased in the very near future.
The number “8” is a very lucky number to the Chinese, and Phelps is the only athlete to have earned eight individual gold medals.
Of course, there are other joyous 2008 Olympic moments, and I applaud all Guyanese sports ambassadors at the Games.
Their respective participation is as valuable as winning a gold, silver or bronze medal, in my books.
The colour of The Golden Arrowhead amongst other flags was amazing to look at. T. Pemberton
