An 11th minute blaster off a left foot shot by forward Romelo Fraser was all that was needed to take Fruta Conquerors to an exciting win over Sunburst Camptown in the final of the inaugural Courts Pee wee under-11 championship at the Banks DIH ground, Thirst Park last evening.
Watched by a vociferous and animated crowd which included Courts Guyana Inc. Country Manager Lester Alvis and Public Relations Officer Zeya Ramnauth, the players contesting the championship match entertained the crowd from start to finish.
Carting off the 3rd place trophy in another thriller which was decided in extra time was Strike again 2-1 ahead of Beacon.
A defence error and a Kurt Steele extra effort accounted for the winner’s goals while Kerrol Heywood, who ended as the tournaments leading goal scorer (9), converted for Beacon in the 28th minute.
But the final was the match of the tournament with both teams going after each other in a match that was classified as the clash of the juices.
The Fruta side was certainly the better of the two on the night but kudos are in order for the Camptown line up who also performed well, a fitting climax to an exciting and welcomed tournament which showcased some of the future Golden Jaguars.
Copping the Most valuable player award was crowd favourite, Fruta conquerors captain and diminutive forward Ryan ‘Bum Bum’ Hackett who mesmerized the Camptown defence on quite a few occasions.
Camptown’s goalkeeper, Levar Baptiste copped the best goalie award; Plaisance was named the most disciplined team, while the Most Supportive Parent trophy went to Michelle Gravesande of Strike Again.
Courts Country Manager Lester Alvis in remarks at the presentation ceremony, which was held immediately after the final, said the level of skills showcased in both games were extraordinary.
“To see the discipline and dedication displayed by these children is indeed remarkable. Congratulations to them and their coaches, your hard work paid off.”
He noted that the youths of today need to be more exposed to positive elements of life which will aid in their development.
“Courts Guyana Inc. under our motto of ‘Adding Value Everyday’ has now formally fulfilled our social responsibility as part of our mandate in the development of youths.
As such, Courts Guyana is very pleased to have been associated with this Endeavour and highly applauds this initiative taken by the Georgetown Football Association in creating the environment which enhances the skill of youths.”
Team members of both Conquerors and Camptown were presented with Courts haversacks.
Meanwhile, as promised, the Fruta Conquerors team can now look forward to their special incentive promised them by Managing director of Guyana Beverage Inc., Robert Selman for winning against their Sunburst rivals.
