‘Golden Jaguars’ Roar to 3-0 win over Dominica
The Lights at the Guyana National stadium Providence was christened in
fine style last evening when the ‘Golden Jaguars’ whipped Dominica 3-0 in the opening game of group B of the Digicel Caribbean Championship.
The 2006/7 leading goal scorer Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington blasted a double while debutant Glenorvan Edmonds also made his debut a memorable one when he slotted home Guyana’s second goal. Debutant Devon Millington also had a good game for Guyana.
A reasonable crowd witnessed a good performance by the Jaguars who were not by any means at their best, but did enough to blank their Dominican counterparts who never looked threatening.
Controlling the game for the most part were the hosts who opted to expose a number of players for the first time and they responded very well, according to Technical Director Jamaal Shabazz.
The opening goal came after 20 minutes, a fierce right foot shot by Codrington that rocketed into the roof of the nets off a pass from Walter Moore who played a midfield role rather than his usual defensive position.
The opening strike brought loud cheers from the fans, who were agitating all along for a goal, based on the dominance of the Jaguars.
Edmonds added his name to the score sheet on 36 minutes after another excellent build up from the local team and an equally good pass from Codrington in the box.
The game was sealed Guyana’s way in the 43rd minute after Dwight Peters who enjoyed a good game also, passed to the hungry Codrington who did the rest.
Codrington missed the opportunity to finish with a hat-trick when his shot from the spot in the 52nd minute after Dwight Peters was brought down, was parried away by goalkeeper and captain, Glenson Prince.
Dominica looked a bit more purposeful in the second half but the Jaguars were guilty of easing off the throttle and not pressing forward with any degree of hunger.
When the final whistle was sounded by Barbadian Referee Mark Forde, the score read Guyana 3, Dominica 0.
Game 2 this evening from 19:00hrs features Suriname and Dominica. The final game of the group brings together Guyana and Suriname tomorrow evening with a supporting match between the national under-17 and 20 teams preceding this crucial encounter.
Children under the age of 12 will be admitted free and fans can look forward to lots of giveaways, including cell phones, from sponsors, Digicel.
