History is set to unfold this evening at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence when the ‘Golden Jaguars’ match skills with Dominica in the first game of group B play in the 2008 Digicel Caribbean Championship.
This encounter will be the first sporting event to ever take place under the newly installed lights at this facility.
Head coach of the Dominica team Robertson Hypolite speaking with Kaieteur Sport after the team arrived at the Main Street Plaza Hotel, said he was very happy to be here and is equally honoured to be the first team to christen the flood lights.
Hypolite disclosed that the team has been together for just under 4-weeks and it is the same team that played against Barbados in the FIFA World Cup Qualifying competition.
While he says that the all local based Dominica team will give a good account of themselves, Hypolite conceded that he really does not know anything much about Guyana and will have to watch them keenly in the opening minutes of this evening’s encounter. “I expect Guyana to come and play at their best and may the best team win.”
In terms of the challenging time they endured in arriving at their final destination for the games, the Head Coach firmly believes that that would not affect his charges.
“As long as you love the game of football you have to expect these things. Football I think is in the mind and I think the players want to play the game regardless of all the changes in the plans you can see the spirit because these players want to show Guyana that in Dominica there is good football.”
The last time the two countries met was in the group H of the last DCC at GCC where Guyana triumphed.
The Golden Jaguars who was the only country with a 100% record after the group stages in the last Championship will be aiming to return to this kind of dominant form and Technical Director Jamaal is backing his charges to do well.
The Jaguars have been hard at training over the last 4-days and are eager to change around recent results which did not go in their favour.
Hypolite stated that the strength of his team is the commitment of his players to play as a unit.
“We have our individual style but we bring everything together and we play as a team and that’s what football is all about. So as long as we can go on the field and execute our game plan then I think the game will be exciting and we should get the result that we want.” Kick off time this evening is 19:00hrs.
