Technical Director of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Jamaal Shabazz said he and his staff are very impressed with the commitment of the young players drafted into the senior squad preparing for group B action in eth 2008 Digicel Caribbean Championship (DCC) which kicks off tomorrow.
He said they will try to see if they can bring a couple of these players in the final 18 when they sit down to finalise the team, today.
“But we are happy given the short period of time, the players have responded well to what we have attempted to do.”
Shabazz also expressed pleasure with the inclusion of Coach Bilaal Nantambu whom he said has settled in very well with the rest of the group which is part of the rebuilding process.
Among the young training with the senior Golden Jaguars are goalkeepers Richie Richards and O’Neal Heywood; Kabir Khan, Kevin Beaton, Frank Dover, Dwayne Blake Colin Nelson, Chris Camacho, Devon Dennis, Beavon Moseley.
T&T based Brion Baker and Glenorvan Edmonds have also been training with the squad.
Fans can gear up to see a team that is more hungry to work as a unit according to Shabazz, who has guided Guyana’s football to its best ever placing in the world and has been responsible for its constant rise with the exposure of more than half the national team to the Pro League in Trinidad and Tobago.
“It’s a bunch of players who feel personally responsible for us not advancing in the last qualifiers and the guys feel very, very committed to taking it a step further using this Digicel. At the end of the day though, the results is in the hands of Allah.”
With regard to the current offensive against the GFF that is taking place in the media, Shabazz said that he has asked the players not to comment to the media and not to focus on who should be president and anything of the sort.
“Our job at this stage is to focus on the football on the field and as technicians I am there to ensure that we do just that.”
Meanwhile, the supporting game for Sunday Redemption clash against Suriname will bring together the nation under-17 and 20 teams from 17:00hrs or 5pm.
