Martindale Secondary School in the Pomeroon received a quantity of cricket gear courtesy of the ‘Reds’ Perreira Sports Foundation during a presentation ceremony which was held at the Guyana Cricket Board’s Office on Regent Street yesterday.
The gear which included bats, wicketkeeping gloves and pads, batting pads and balls were presented to President of the Essequibo Cricket Board Alvin Johnson in the company of GCB officials Claude Raphael and Malcolm Peters.
Perreira speaking at the ceremony said that giving back to his alma mater is simply going back to his roots, adding that wherever you go in the world, it is important to remember where you came from.
In presenting the gift to Johnson, Perreira advised that the students make full use of the gears and care them, whilst calling on the Head Teacher, to not lock them away in some cupboard which could deprive the intended beneficiaries of its use.
Johnson in delivering an overview of Essequibo cricket, said that even though not much has been attained at the senior level, the region now has at least three players on the national Under-19 team, all of whom recently returned from the West Indies series.
He thanked Perreira for the gift and assured that his message about the use of the gears will be conveyed to the relevant authority.
