A manhunt has been launched for a prisoner who escaped from the Timehri Prison on Saturday night.
Shawn Yhap, who is serving time for simple larceny, used the opportunity while on an outdoor exercise to secure his freedom.
A senior Prison official confirmed yesterday that the prisoner was missing following checks after the exercise was completed.
The source said that inmates at the Timehri facility are not considered high-risk, although every effort is made to ensure that they complete their full term of incarceration.
This is the first reported direct prison escape from that institution for this year.
Other prisoners had secured their escape while being escorted by the police, notably multiple-murder accused Jermaine ‘Skinny’ Charles, who managed to pass through a hole in the floor of the Sparendaam Police Station lock-ups a little over a month ago.
Another prisoner, Trevor Major, escaped last week by jumping from a police enclosed van while being transported back to the Camp Street jail.
All of these prisoners remain at large, despite stringent efforts by the security forces to recapture them.
