Just imagine having the luxury to ditch a car that had provided you with great joy and success for most of your career for a new and faster one, but with little time to get adjusted.
Well, this is the risk Ryan Rahaman is willing to take when he pilots his spanking new Ford Sierra Cosworth at Sunday’s Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club ‘Race of Champions’ Meeting, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Rahaman, who leads the point standings in the overall classification and is also ahead of everyone in the Group 2B and 3 categories, has for the time being discarded the tried and tested Ford Escort which has been responsible for much of the success in his career so far.
According to the speed ace who comes from a bloodline of racers that includes his father Jad and Uncle Ray the car will be making its debut on Sunday and even though it’s new he still has to learn it a little more because it is a bit different than his previous car.
“I’m still trying to get accustomed to the braking and handling as you know it is a bigger car that the Escort with much more horsepower and is turbo-charged as well,” Rahaman disclosed.
He added that because it’s a new machine, he anticipates some initial problems, but felt that even a poor showing should not greatly affect his lead.
Asked about his mental and physical preparedness, Rahaman responded with a slight laugh, before stating that those are two important attributes in the sport that he takes seriously.
He revealed that drivers such as Keith Evelyn, Kamal Seebarran, Trinidadians Tanko Baboolall and Ravi Singh and Kemal Rahaman as among those who can pose a serious challenge to his supremacy.
“I can tell you that the car has the potential to compete in Group 4 as well, but it will need some additional development and horsepower to really be competitive.”
That he concludes would require a larger level of sponsorship, but with the success he has gained so far that may very well be one short step away.
Just to emphasise his seriousness in maintaining his stranglehold on the championship, Rahaman has brought back the experienced Barbadian mechanic Freddie Mapp and his assistant Tedroy along with locals Hakim, Junior and Veeko.
Rahaman is being sponsored by Guysons Engineering, GEM Magazine, J.R Burgers, Duncan Batteries and Sankar Auto Color.
