Jul 21, 2008 Letters
Dear Editor,
I refer to a letter from one Mr. Avinash Balram, in SN of July 16th 2008, and I am forced to take issue with a situation which has gotten completely out of hand.
Mr. Balram says the following: “It took young David Patterson to unearth this muddle and for this I must congratulate him, he will make a fine MP.”
Mr. Balram is completely wrong and he has been misled. This entire matter was uncovered by Mr. Winston Murray, and not Patterson, during the PAC meeting in question.
After the public accounts meeting that day, Patterson made an inaccurate report of events to the SN, playing up the role he played in this matter and downplaying Winston Murray’s role, since it was Murray who in fact brought this matter to the attention of the committee; and I for one am completely outraged by this deception.
I have made my own evaluation of Mr. Patterson as an MP, especially in the Public Accounts Committee, and my perception of him does not match the perception of Mr. Balram, who has been misled.
Frankly, I have already expressed my disapproval of the fact that the AFC has opted to place in the PAC this member, Patterson, a quantities surveyor, who I understand is doing Government valuation contracts on an ongoing basis.
As such, therefore, I consider him to be in a conflict of interest position, and I cannot imagine how the AFC could have made such a blunder.
As a result, the AFC cannot now, or at any time, condemn the numerous and flagrant conflict of interest situations existing in this country.
The people in this nation deserve the truth, they have been lied to and misled for long enough, and the SN, whom we all supported during the withdrawal of Government ads. issue, must play their part honestly.
No one from the SN was at this PAC meeting, they depended entirely on what Patterson told them, and the Hansard is there to confirm that what I say is the truth.
Anthony Vieira MS, MP
