Dear Editor,
Having read the Antiguan report relating to President Jadgeo’s meeting with Guyanese there, I am shocked at the Government’s response, as the issues raised are not new, nor are they uncommon.
Within recent years, Guyana has been plagued by crime and victimization, issues which are being discussed wherever Guyanese are living. So what is the big fuss?
President Jadgeo was recently reported by the Guyana Chronicle as saying that he does not waste time dealing with the media and its perceived biased reporting against the Government, yet he spends much time attacking journalists.
While healthy debate from both the media and the state should be encouraged, such debate should be based on facts. This is sadly absent, as the tug of war is now becoming personal. What is really lacking here is mutual respect.
I congratulate the Guyana Press Association and its president, Denis Chabrol, for standing up and defending the rights and freedoms of journalists.
