Guyana’s oldest policing body is 171 years old
The City Constabulary will today commence one week of activities to mark its 171st anniversary.
The City Constabulary, commonly referred to as ‘City Police’ is the oldest policing organisation in the country, and is currently headed by Assistant Commissioner Gayle George.
Speaking with this newspaper, one of the ranks noted that becoming a Police rank was the best decision he has ever made, given that the organisation is one that instills discipline.
The role of the City Constables is almost identical to that of the members of the Guyana Police Force. However, the City Police are confined to the 15 square miles that make up Georgetown.
A City Constable is empowered under the Police Act Chapter 16:01 to stop and search any vehicle, aircraft or vessel. A rank is also empowered to, with reasonable cause, stop, search, and detain any individual, and he or she may also arrest the individual.
Among the activities planned to commemorate the event is a religious service today at the City’s Concert Hall.
One Monday there will be a fitness walk, which will be followed the next day by a workshop on Carifesta.
Thursday will be a games day, and on Friday there will be a children’s feeding programme.
