A man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with illegal possession of a firearm. The accused, Julian Mc Kenzie, made his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.
It is alleged that on Sunday July 13, at Bartica, he had in his possession one .32 semi automatic pistol, without being the holder of a valid firearm license. To the charge Mc Kenzie pleaded not guilty.
He is being represented by defense counsel Peter Hugh, who, in making a bail application for Mc Kenzie, asked the court to consider granting bail since his client would not be afforded a speedy trial.
Hugh argued that the Bartica Court will have its next sitting on August 6, and the Magistrate will be proceeding on leave. This, Hugh said, would mean that his client will be incarcerated until then.
However, Police Prosecutor Harvey objected to bail. Harvey also asked that the court take into consideration the seriousness of the offence. Mc Kenzie is expected to make his next court appearance on August 6 at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
