DEAR EDITOR,
The sexual assault/rape of a 14-year-old girl (when the story broke, she was said to be 11) by two ‘grandfathers’ is unforgivable.
It’s such a pity that our laws do not allow for the perpetrators to be hung in public and stoned to death! I take note of the fact that one of them was a former policeman.
I just have to wonder how many other lives he may have ruined behind the protection of the police badge.
The parents, in particular the mother of the teen, should be investigated, as it is my gut feeling that there is more to the story than meets the eye.
An earlier story alleges that she would ‘hold the child while one of the men had sex with her’. You would agree that if that were true, she is just as guilty and doesn’t deserve to be called ‘mother’.
This child has been scarred for life by people she knows and trusts; people who should have been looking out for her best interest. I sincerely hope that she will be afforded the necessary counselling.
I am proud of the residents who intervened to stop this child from being further violated. Our badly eroded society needs more people who are brave enough to stand up for children’s rights.
I urge people everywhere to report abuse. Even if you have just a ‘hunch’, your report may bring relief to some lonely suffering child who has nowhere to go and no one to turn to. Vanessa Devonish
