Victory breaks 25-year drought
By Franklin Wilson
Dolphin Speed Swim Club (DSSC) was able to finally break a 25 year old jinx when they captured their Inter-Club 4-day meet which concluded yesterday at the Colgrain Swimming Pool, Camp Street.
DSSC, who almost found it a norm to play second fiddle to the other clubs in Guyana, more so, usual champions, Dorado Speed Swim Club, finally mustered the courage and determination to take top honours by amassing a total of 1327 points.
They relegated Dorado to the runner up position with 1268 points, Silver Sharks took the 3rd place with 702 points while Orca was 4th with a mere 15.
Dolphin led after the first and second days 49-15 and 102-84 but found themselves trailing Dorado after the third day 548-642.
But they were able to dig deep on the final day to turn the table on their old time nemesis to take the Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Championship trophy.
Club president Phillip Walcott in an invited comment after his clubs historical triumph said the win means the whole world to them.
He said they have struggled over the years not just being number 4 out of 4 clubs but was considerably behind.
“What this signals for us more than the victory is that Dolphin is back. Meaning that we have now revamped as a club with competitive swimmers and we can be competitive. This to me is what is the real joy, we have grown significantly in numbers and this is the single factor that has contributed to our success.”
Walcott mentioned that fact that many times before they could not have fielded swimmers in many events which had a negative impact on their ability to be competitive but this time around, it was a different story.
The club he said sat down and planed out what it would take to create a winning unit and they were able to strategize.
They were able to set up a branch of the club in Linden which greatly enhanced their ability to be much more competitive.
“Setting up this branch helped us to increase our numbers and this in the end contributed to us being victorious.”
Walcott also singled out the hard work of club coach Christopher Adams who has worked long and hard as well as club secretary Andrea Mentore who has been a tower of strength.
