A number of football enthusiasts in the Berbice area, including some former national players, have come together and arranged a number of fund raising activities to off set the expense for injured footballer Shane Thompson.
Thompson was seriously injured in a freak accident during the recently concluded ‘Old Beef’ Humphrey Memorial football tournament. Thompson, who is a member of the Arsenal Football Club, was representing North New Amsterdam in a match against South New Amsterdam when he slid and injured his head.
The 18 year old youngster, who is a student of the New Amsterdam Technical Institute, was picked up by teammates and officials at the ground in a semi conscious state, bleeding through the nose and was rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where doctors placed him under observation; however after not getting much word from the hospital, family members decided to remove him.
He was then taken to the Woodlands hospital where he underwent emergency surgery at the cost of over $500,000. It was observed that he sustained a fractured skull and will have to undertake follow up treatment which is very costly.
Family members said that they had to take him out of the Woodlands Hospital after the surgery because of the daily cost for his recovery.
Club president, former national player Sherwin Forde, said that this is a humanitarian gesture and decided to help.
As a consequence, he has made his business place available and along with some other former national players including his brother Adrian, Keith and Neil Humphrey, Sam Jones and Phillip Carrington among others have decided to do as much as possible to assist.
The first such venture which will be a Bar-B-Que and lime will be held on Saturday at the popular Fordy’s Sub Letta’s hang out at the corner of Tucber Park and Winkle Road in New Amsterdam, a raffle will also be held on the day while a number of other events will follow shortly.
