The Guyana Police Force has approached the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice on the way forward in the case involving the alleged shooting of a Police rank by Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys.
Kaieteur News understands that a file containing several statements has been completed, and the Police are awaiting the advice of the DPP on whether or not to institute charges against the magistrate.
According to a source, Magistrate Gilhuys has lodged all of his weapons with the Police, including the one reportedly used in the shooting.
Police have stated that the weapon used by the magistrate in the incident was one that was loaned to him while he was a member of the Force.
On Thursday night last, Constable Mark George of the Police Quick Reaction Group was shot by the magistrate when the patrol made a routine stop to check on Gilhuys’s parked vehicle along Woolford Avenue.
One bullet entered the policeman’s back and exited his abdomen. Charles’s condition is still listed as critical.
Meanwhile, the magistrate is required to report to the Police on a daily basis.
Yesterday, the magistrate was not required to attend court, since he has been granted leave by Chancellor Carl Singh.
A senior official of the magistracy told this newspaper that there is no word that Magistrate Gilhuys has been officially suspended.
However, a source told this newspaper that the magistrate will not sit until the entire matter is completed.
Magistrate Gilhuys faces charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, discharging a loaded weapon, wounding with intent, and attempted murder.
