A 25-year-old labourer and his wife were shot under mysterious circumstances at around 21:00 hrs last night at their Belmont, Mahaica home.
Mahenda Mahabal was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) with a gunshot wound to the right side chest, while his wife, 20-year-old Bagmattie Persaud, was shot in the right foot.
They were both listed as stable and were admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Earlier reports had suggested that bandits had attacked the young couple.
However, investigations by police indicate that the two were wounded during a dispute.
According to Bagmattie Persaud, she and her husband were in their bedroom when he heard noises outside and went to investigate.
The woman said that shortly after, she heard a gunshot.
She said she ran outside and heard another gunshot.
Persaud told Kaieteur News that she did not see the person or persons who fired the shots.
She was also unable to say how she sustained her injury, but stated that nothing was stolen from the house.
Police sources also said that neighbours saw no bandits and stated that they had overheard two people arguing shortly before hearing the gunshots.
The wounded man’s brother, Ramesh Mahabal, said he had just entered his brother’s yard when someone informed him that Mahabal had been shot.
The man said he then saw his brother, who was bleeding profusely from the chest, and assisted in taking him and his wife to hospital.
The wounded man’s brother also said that he saw no one fleeing from the area.
