RHTYSC cricket teams honour 80 fathers
Some eighty (80) fathers were honoured last Sunday by the Rose Hall Town Farfan and Mendes under-15 and Pepsi under-19 cricket teams when the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) held its annual Pre-Father’s Day Luncheon and Awards Ceremony at the J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School, Corentyne Berbice.
The event was organised by the two junior teams under the Club’s ‘Tribute Role Model Project’ and forms another Community Development project for both teams.
The fathers were specially treated at a luncheon where they received special gifts and a food hamper. They were also entertained by live music by International Guyanese musician Ivan Harry also known as D’ Ivan and his band.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster speaking at the ceremony noted that the RHTY&SC places lots of emphasis on building a united family with high values.
“The father as the head of the family is very important as he is often the provider and the parent to instill discipline in the children. Of all the abuses in the world, there is none worst than a negligent father as children needs a father in their lives to be a role model as they fight against the social ills of society.”
Foster congratulated the fathers present for being positive examples raising their children with a high level of discipline.
The members of the teams were responsible for organising the event and raising the necessary funds as part of their self- development programme that seeks to educate them on the need to be respectful to their elders and to play a role in projects that would have a positive effect on others.
Speaking on behalf of the teams, Mark Fernandes stated that he and his teammates felt privileged to honour the fathers who were also role models. He noted that this is the club’s way of preparing them for future leadership roles while at the same time assisting them to become role models to their peers.
Retired Headmaster, 85 year old Esau Mootoo, who was the oldest father present, responding on behalf of the other fathers, said they were all very happy to be part off such an auspicious occasion organised by the youngsters and that it was rare to see a bunch of talented young cricketers taking time out to honour the elder generation.
He wished them all the best in the future and called on them to remember that the keys to success are discipline, hard work and a strong faith in God.
The two teams also named 75-year-old Walter Nero (father of 8) of Portuguese Quarters, the Region 6 role model of the year. Nero was praised for raising two sons and six daughters single handedly after the death of his wife when the children were young.
He was presented with a number of gifts and a special certificate.
