The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated is appealing to residents to desist from erecting and/or installing street lights.
In a press release issued yesterday, the power company said that any person found erecting or installing any illegal street lights will be prosecuted.
The statement comes in the wake of the arrest of a Bachelor’s Adventure, East Coast Demerara man last week for erecting a street light on a GPL pole outside his home.
According to the GPL release, persons who wish to erect or install street lights must first seek the permission of the Lighting Authority, since the GPL is not responsible for the granting of such permission.
The GPL stated that the Lighting Authority is primarily responsible for all street lighting.
In the case of Georgetown, the Lighting Authority can be found within the offices of the Mayor and City Council.
In rural areas, the Lighting Authority is located at the offices of the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils, and in the case of small towns, it can be found at the offices of the Town Council.
The GPL said that there is a cost for street lighting, and this is divided into two areas: the cost of purchasing and installing the lights, and the energy charge per month.
“The average cost of operating a 175-watt mercury vapour lamp (this kind is commonly sold in stores), which uses about 65 units of electricity, is about $3,500 per month,” the GPL said.
