Two dozen Venezuelans rounded up and deported
(Kaieteur News) – At least two dozen Venezuelan migrants were reportedly rounded up and deported on Tuesday, with men, women and children, including a six-month-old baby, among those detained.
Kaieteur News has not yet independently verified the reports.
This newspaper contacted the relevant authorities seeking confirmation and further details. However, calls to officials went unanswered up to press time.
Kaieteur News understands that some of the migrants reached out to a group seeking assistance while they were being transported to a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) base at Timehri.

One woman sent a message to the group shortly after she was detained.
“Buenos días grupo, necesito alguien que me ayude aquí a ver” (Good morning group, I need someone to help me), she wrote, before explaining that she was among the Venezuelans picked up by soldiers on Tuesday morning in the Hill Foot area along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
According to the woman, GDF ranks arrived in the area at around 6:00 a.m. and rounded up the Venezuelan nationals.
“Vinieron en una buseta y nos recogieron a todos los venezolanos y ahora nos están deportando para Venezuela” (They came in a bus and picked up all the Venezuelans and now they are deporting us to Venezuela), she said.
The woman also complained that the migrants were ill-treated during the process. However, she said that upon their arrival at the military base, they were provided with food and water.
After reaching the airport, she informed the group that three additional busloads of Venezuelans were expected to arrive.
The migrants were reportedly prohibited from taking photographs or recording videos. However, at least one person managed to secretly record a few videos on a cellphone, which were subsequently shared.
Kaieteur News also received information that the migrants were transported by aircraft to Kumaka, Mabaruma, Region One, before reportedly being taken by boat to the Venezuelan border.
The circumstances surrounding the reported roundup and deportation, including the number of persons involved and the authority under which the operation was conducted, remain unclear.
