Dear Editor,
They speak the language of love in the form we know,
but then in a way baffling in depth and mystery—
it’s still a secret in the Universe.
What in all of nature can speak softer,
and send messages with eyes and nurture with hands tender?
And who with one word, one look
can give to a lonesome heart such measure of bliss,
or send to crawl to the edge of the abyss?
We give them the first flowers of Spring.
We watch how they dance and sing.
They are more than the pupil in the eye;
we would wage a war against the world not to see them cry.
But, for some they are gilded merchandise
to trade in marketplaces in dollars and dinars.
Some violate their bodies and minds in bestial ways
that make the rocks on the hills leap in rage.
Some send them to dance before the lustful eyes of men
who interrupt the rhythm of drums and dancing bells
with the sound of bags of golden coins tossed on delicate feet.
And some send them to houses of ill repute.
The world then counts and measures the stains on their soul,
but not the poison they drink that the wretched hands of men pour.
Yours etc,
Haimnauth Cecil Ramkirath
