Morgan’s Learning Centre wins US Champions League Debating Competition

Kaieteur News – Students of Morgan’s Learning Centre (MLC, a leading private school in Guyana have copped the winning prize in the US Champions’ League Debating Competition, hosted by the National Library, in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy Guyana – (American Corner Guyana).
Grade nine students from twelve (12) Secondary Schools across four Regions; three, four, six and ten, competed in this contest.
This programme provided a platform for students to respectfully debate topical issues openly. This year’s debates focused on the theme “Climate Change and the Environment”.
The debates covered a range of topics in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) syllabus, while promoting fair exchange of ideas and appreciation for different perspectives. The students through hard work and dedication gained a greater understanding of global matters. Successful participants were awarded electronic devices, trophies, medals, and book awards, in addition to other prizes.
Chargé d’ Affaires of the US Embassy, Adrienne Galanek, attended the closing ceremony and applauded the initiative and great work of all twelve participating schools. She encouraged them to work with peer groups to create change in their respective communities.
Ms. Galanek expressed gratitude to the National Library of Guyana for this great initiative and congratulated all the finalists and participants.
In the list of winners of the Students of Morgan’s Learning Centre led in the US Champions’ League Debating Competition. Overall, the winning team were announced as MLC’s which consisted of Sarah Haywood, Chelsy Ann Thames and Arthur Joseph.
At the preliminary round one, MLC faced off with Mae’s Secondary on the topic of carbon taxing to debate on an effective way to mitigate global warming.
At the 2nd round, MLC faced New Campbellville Secondary to debate on the topic, ‘Plastics should be banned in Guyana’. In that round, Chelsy-Ann Thames emerged the best speaker.
At the semi-finals, MLC students debated against Tutorial Academy Secondary on the issue of, ‘climate change is a threat to all life’.
During the final held on June 16, 2023, MLC opposed the Linden Foundation Secondary on the issue of’, ‘Over population is the main cause for Global Warming’.
In this round, Sarah Haywood and Chelsy Ann Thames emerged best speakers. Linden Foundation Secondary School winners were, Jachine Walks, Ashley Ramcharran, Dishawn Ashby.
Among the other notable performers were, Mr. Rafiel Rameez Husain from Tutorial Academy Secondary School in Region Six and Ms Akeelah Kellman from Skeldon Line Path Secondary School in Region Six.
The activity was conducted in partnership with the National Library and the U.S. Embassy supported the first iteration of the American Corner debate competition.
