Dear Editor,
I am adding my voice to the alleged sexual assault of a sixteen-year-old schoolgirl by a sitting Minister of Government.
I have also noted that the young victim is seeking redress and has written to the Head-of-State and the relevant subject Ministers expressing the harrowing experience she suffered at the hands of the perpetrator. It is hoped that appropriate action would be swiftly taken to assist the victim who is traumatised and is crying out for help.
According to the United Nations, such actions must be quick with unhindered access to justice as there must be protection of our women and girls. It is my wish that the victim does not encounter unnecessary hardships and face barriers in her quest for assistance and justice. This is so sad. Interestingly, the V I C E President is silent. Further, I am unaware that any Amerindian organization has raised its voice in protest.
Mr. Editor, the alleged perpetrator who committed this dastardly act should indeed proceed on leave to ensure an uninterrupted, impartial, and thorough investigation. It is also an opportune time for those with responsibility for the health of our nation to provide avenues to address the social and emotional wellness, and mental health challenges of our citizens. Because clearly the accused has displayed a behaviour akin to addiction. Therefore, the Government must consider whether the Minister of Local Government is still fit to serve in that capacity and to oversee the local democratic organs in the ten administrative regions of Guyana.
Regards,
Dr. Karen Cummings
