Young Green Machine training camp to intensify as RAN C/ship draws closer

Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) is gearing up to send its National U19 Boy’s team to Jamaica for the Rugby Americas North (RAN) championship. This exciting event is scheduled to take place from July 10 – 16 at the University of the West Indies in Kingston.

The team’s preparations have ramped up over the past few weeks, in order to get the team game-ready and ensure a strong performance at this year’s championship. Meanwhile, the young Green Machine is currently undergoing an intensive training programme. GRFU Treasurer, Troy Yhip, stated in recent interview: “By the end of June, a training camp comprising twenty-five members will be selected, from which the final squad for the trip to Jamaica will be chosen.”
Yhip also expressed his satisfaction with the current turnout for training sessions, stating, “They (the team) were previously affected by the CXC examination. He explained, “More players are coming to the practice sessions now that the CXC exams are at its closing stage. With the academic hurdles behind them, the team can focus wholeheartedly on their training.”
The Treasurer further explained that the training is now entering its tactical phase, signaling an escalation in preparation over the upcoming weeks. He remains optimistic that the team will have ample training opportunities before departing for Jamaica.
According to him, “The team currently utilizes the National Park for training sessions from Mondays to Fridays, and on Sundays, they engage in practice matches to refine their skills ahead of the championship.”
However, prior to the championship’s commencement, the team is expected to arrive in Jamaica at least two days in advance. This will allow them to acclimate to the environment and make any necessary final preparations before stepping onto the field to compete against other regional contenders.
The GRFU is actively reaching out to businesses and organisations, calling upon them to collaborate in its mission to revive and elevate the game of rugby within the region.
Yhip urged these entities to consider supporting the union’s endeavors to promote and uplift the sport, seeking their partnership in restoring rugby to its former glory.
