Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) 2023 National Championship kicked off yesterday at the Inner Circuit of the National Park. The event, which is slated for four days of intense competition, commenced yesterday and will conclude in Linden on the 25th of June.
The opening day featured the Juvenile’s, Women’s and Junior’s race categories. Cycling enthusiasts witnessed a sensational start to competition, as Alexander Leung, Cleviecia Spencer, and Aaron Newton emerged victorious in their respective races.
Despite a slightly delayed start and a modest number of spectators at the finish line, Leung was crowned the champion of the Juvenile’s race with an impressive time of one hour, eight minutes and one second (1:08:01.66). Spencer, on the other hand dominated Women’s race; swiftly conquering the 25-lap challenge in 1:10.52 to secure a well-deserved first-place finish. Aaron Newton also delivered an outstanding performance on the opening day, claiming the top spot with a remarkable time of 1:46:51.02 in the Junior’s race.
In the Women’s race, Cleviecia Spencer showcased her skills throughout the duration of the event and emerged victorious. From the very beginning, she established her dominance early in the race which led to her securing a resounding first-place, podium finish. Savannah Hyles closely followed in second place, while Abigale Jeffrey claimed the third-place.
Over in the Juvenile’s race, Alexander Leung earned the coveted champion’s title. He conquered the 25 laps contest with an impressive display of determination to clinch the first-place in style. Sydwel Sandy secured second place, while Alex Newton took the third spot.
The final race of the day, the Junior’s race, witnessed an impressive performance by Aaron Newton. He maintained a commanding lead in the 40-lap race, emerging as the champion. Ajuni Cutting also put up a strong performance, settling for second place, followed by Sebastian Nathan in third.
The excitement continues today with the commencement of the Master’s race, scheduled to start at 7:00 hours. This race spans a distance of 98.97 kilometers (97.5 miles), commencing at Carifesta Avenue and traversing along the East Coast Highway to Halfway Tree before returning to culminate at the starting point.
