– Finale set for June 15
Kaieteur Sports – The Petra Organisation’s Upper Mazaruni Inter-Village U-18 Football Championship, which has the support of Trophy Stall and MVP Sports, and was set for its inaugural kick-off on June 18, had its date brought forward to June 11.
According to the organising team, this was done to facilitate selection for the top teams to be a part of the 8th edition of the Digicel’s Schools Football Championship, which was recently launched.
Initially, the tournament was billed to take place from June 18 – June 25, but the finale has also been brought forward to June 15.
The competing teams are Kaikan/Arau, Paruima, Waramadong, Kamarang, Kako, and Jewalla.
Each of the competing teams received one football, while the co-ordinating committee collected four balls and eight corner flags.
The tournament will be played at the Edwin United Sports ground with the DC Caesar Fox School serving as the co-ordinating committee.
In today’s fixtures, Kamarang and Jawalla collide at 9:30 hrs then Kaikan and Waramadong face off at 15:00 hrs.
On Monday, Paruima tackle Waramadong in the first match while Kako meet Jawalla in the second match. Tuesday will see Paruima go up against Kaikan while Kako challenges Kamarang.
At the launch of the tournament, Neil Henrito – coordinator of the competition, stated that the school decided to stage the event because it is difficult to acquire sponsorship given the cost associated with participating in competitions.
Henrito further said that he is pleased to have the Petra Organization onboard as they are at the forefront of the development of youth football especially at the school level.
Meanwhile, at the launch of the tournament which was done at Spice Garden, the Petra Organisation Co-Director, Troy Mendonca, stated, “We are happy to be associated with the event. We have developed a relationship with school over the years and I am happy to see they took the initiative to have a competition of this nature played within their realm.”
He further said that entity will provide any necessary support and wish them all the best for a successful tournament.
