Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s senior squash Men and Women team have had a tough start at the 2023 Pan American qualifiers in Cartagena, Colombia. The tournament commenced on the 4th June and will run until June 10th; however Guyana’s men and women campaign ended early at the round of 32 stage of the tournament.
Team Guyana opened their campaign with contrasting results on the first day of the tournament. However, they managed to secure two victories while facing three defeats to close off the opening day. Despite the mixed outcomes, Nicolette Fernandes and Jason Ray Khalil had solid performances in the round of 64 to earn their spots in the round of 32.
In a thrilling start to the tournament, Jason-Ray Khalil triumphed in the round of 64, securing his first victory of the qualifiers. Khalil displayed remarkable skills as he defeated Darien Benn from Barbados in a closely contested match (11-6, 1-11, 9-11, 1-11), which booked him a spot in the round of 32. While Jason-Ray Khalil showcased his determination, the other members of the team faced tough challenges. Alex Arjoon fought hard but was unable to overcame Peru’s Rafael Galvez (11-4, 11-6, 11-7), ending his campaign in the round of 64 stage. Similarly, Samuel Ince-Carvalhal and Ashley Khalil both suffered losses against Gabriel Torrez (11-6, 12-10, 13-11) and Marina Stefanoni of the USA (6-11, 5-11, 2-11) respectively, in their opening matches.
Despite his well deserved win against the Barbadian, his journey was short lived after being defeated by world number one, Diego Elias (Peru), who proved to be a formidable opponent. Jason Ray Khalil was eliminated after a valiant effort against Elias in the round of 32. Elias demonstrated his prowess, overpowering Khalil (11-3, 11-0, 11-3).
Nicolette Fernandes, on the other hand, had a challenging round of 32 encounter as well against Giselle Delgado (Chile). Despite putting up a strong fight, Fernandes was unable to secure the win, with Delgado emerging victorious (8-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-5). Taylor Fernandes was also quieted by a tough, Nikki Todd from Canada, she too were unable to advance to the next round, after suffering 11-5, 11-8 and 11-6 defeat.
However, their campaign turned out to be even more disastrous at the this year’s tournament as both the men and women recorded losses on Tuesday; the men’s team of Khalil, Ince-Cavalhal and Arjoon lost 3-0 to Argentina, while the women consisting of Nicolette Fernandes, Taylor Fernandes and Ashley Khalil lost by the identical scoreline to Ecuador.
