Man dies after knocked off bicycle by speeding car

Kaieteur News – A 67-year-old pedestrian was on Sunday night killed in an accident on the Mon Repos Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Dead is Muntaz Alli of Mon Repos North. The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that Alli was killed around 21:20 hours.

The police arrested a 48-year-old male of Helena #1 Mahaica ECD, who was the driver of motorcar PMM 9156 which was involved in the accident. Enquiries disclosed that the driver was proceeding east along the southern side of the northern carriageway at an alleged fast rate of speed of 70 kmh. The driver told the police that while driving, he saw a male pushed his bicycle from south to north across the road in the path of his vehicle.

The driver alleged that upon seeing the man, he applied brakes and pulled north to avoid a collision but despite his effort, the right side front of his vehicle collided with the pedestrian which caused the pedestrian to fall onto the road surface where he received injuries about his body.

Alli was picked up in an unconscious condition and escorted to Georgetown Public Hospital where he was seen and examined by a doctor and was pronounced dead on arrival. His body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting post mortem examination. A breathalyser test conducted on the driver read .008% BAC micrograms, and a notice of intended prosecution has been served.
