Young Entrepreneur…
“Many young entrepreneurs like me start their business because they want to give back. Entrepreneurship also encourages people to take initiative in their own lives while providing safe spaces for employment and even stronger cash flow.”

Kaieteur News – “I started my business with the passion to spread African cultures to all other cultures.” Those are the words of young entrepreneur, Aquila Scott who owns and operates a popularly known jewellery business called ‘Adorned Creative Expressions.’
Scott in a recent interview with this magazine related that from a young age she always had an interest for creating things. She said that being the daughter of a teacher and a tailor, creativity was just a natural part of her that she could not escape.
Having been developing her skills over the years, the young woman in 2020 decided to unleash to the world her prodigious talent. That is, in June of 2020, in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Scott launched ‘Adorned Creative Expressions.’
As the name of the business suggests, it allows persons to express themselves through these locally made creative pieces.
Scott told this publication that what had inspired her to open this venture was that she noticed the African culture was becoming more popular and there was a growing interest and appreciation for it which made her happy. “My passion for fashion intertwined with my appreciation for different cultures is the spark I used to start Adorned Creative expressions,” she explained.
Having been making these creative pieces for over two years now, Scott mentioned that the support for her work has been tremendous; which was something she did not expect at all. “I remember being too shy to tell my mother about my plans and business because I thought that she won’t have taken me seriously.”
She added that the way her mother supports and promotes her business truly surprised her, but the genuine interest in her products, and the great support the business has received from friends and even strangers really made an impact on her life and dreams.
Scott shared that reaching where she is today has not been easy, since she was met with a few challenges. She explained that amongst balancing classes, work life and a business, balancing profits and all other challenges, sourcing materials was the most to deal with.
According to her, when she started making jewellery, she would buy materials from the local stores, which made her dependent. But when the local stores stopped supplying the materials she would need, her business would pause and it would be such a frustrating time for her. “However, I overcame this challenge by supporting other small business online who usually supply all the materials I would need,” she stated.
As for the pandemic, she said this affected her business in a positive way. She related that though the lockdown came and the constant fear that came with the pandemic, it was a time that she used to reflect on life and what she would be able to contribute to society.
Already making an impact in our society through her work, Scott told this magazine that the long-term plan is going global with her craft. “For the past three years I’ve been able to serve people from more than four countries. I intend on having several branches across the globe. Some people say Guyanese are the most beautiful people. I also intend on having big fashion shows showcasing Guyanese models as they showcase my product,” she explained.
Meanwhile, our featured entrepreneur is of the view that small business owners are crucial to our society and that they make an impact by creating employment for others.
“Many young entrepreneurs like me start their business because they want to give back. Entrepreneurship also encourages people to take initiative in their own lives while providing safe spaces for employment and even stronger cash flow,” she said.
Scott is also of the view that to boost small business locally there should be more opportunities for these businesses to be showcased. For example, more expos and exhibitions she added. “I also think that there can be healthy competitions where small businesses compete against each other. It will promote networking and even promote the various brands,” she mentioned.
