(Kaieteur News) – The Linden Electricity Company Inc. (LEC) and Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to advance solar energy integration in Linden.
In a statement, GPL said the agreement marks a key step toward strengthening renewable energy use within the town’s electricity network.
The MOU was signed by Head of GPL’s Executive Management Committee, Kesh Nandlall, and LEC General Manager Avery Trim, with GUYSOL Programme Coordinator Amir Dillawar and staff from both entities in attendance.
Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on integrating, operating, and maintaining utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Linden.
The initiative forms part of the Guyana Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Programme (GUYSOL), which aims to diversify the country’s energy mix, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and improve grid reliability.
The project includes the installation of 15 MWp of solar PV capacity and 22 MWh of battery storage, currently under construction in Linden. Once completed, it is expected to boost electricity reliability, lower generation costs, and cut greenhouse gas emissions. GPL said the partnership highlights the importance of strong coordination between the two companies to ensure the safe and efficient integration of renewable energy into the power system. The utility reaffirmed its commitment to expanding sustainable energy solutions and supporting Guyana’s transition to a more resilient and environmentally responsible electricity sector.
