(Kaieteur News) – The Government has said it is moving to establish a comprehensive digital registry of road users as part of its Safe Country initiative aimed at strengthening public safety and improving enforcement of traffic laws.
In an announcement issued yesterday, the Attorney General’s Chambers said it will lead the initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Public Service and Government Efficiency, the Guyana Police Force, and the National Data Management Authority. In a statement, the Chambers said the move follows directives from President Irfaan Ali. The registry will compile information on road users, including licensing details and their history of traffic-related offences, such as prior charges and convictions.
The system is expected to be accessible to a wide cross-section of state agencies, including the Judiciary, the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Prison Service, the Probation Department and the Guyana Revenue Authority.
The database is expected to enhance the enforcement of existing traffic laws, particularly the demerit point system, which provides for the suspension or revocation of driver’s licences for offences such as drunk driving and motor manslaughter. Furthermore, the initiative is intended to improve coordination among agencies involved in traffic enforcement and prosecution.
In addition, the Attorney General’s Chambers disclosed that a new set of legislative amendments has been prepared to update the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act and related laws. These amendments will target issues such as noise nuisance, particularly from motor vehicles, and littering in public spaces. The measures come amid growing public concern over road safety in Guyana involving steady cases of fatal accidents, dangerous driving practices and challenges with enforcement, including speeding, drunk driving and the limited application of penalties. “The Safe Country initiative remains among our government’s highest priorities. Making our roadways and public places safer is a crucial factor in this equation,” the statement said, adding, “These measures form part of the government’s continuing efforts to enhance public safety in Guyana, especially on our roadways and public spaces.”
