Fire which destroyed an apartment building located on Cummings and Fifth Streets, Alberttown on Tuesday night.
(Kaieteur News) – The fire which destroyed an apartment building located on Fifth Street, Alberttown on Tuesday night has left over forty persons – most of whom are Spanish-speaking foreign nationals, homeless.
Fire Chief (ag) Gregory Wickham confirmed that the fire started around 18:30hrs. By 19:00hrs, it quickly engulfed the wooden and concrete building. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines on an event, Wickham said while the fire destroyed the building, the occupants of the building escaped unhurt.
“When we got the call and responded with fire five tenders…Firefighters managed to bring the fire down to a controllable position and hence, prevented the blaze from spreading to other buildings in proximity.” According to Wickham, many of the occupants who were displaced were from Cuba, the Dominican Republic as well as a few from Guyana. When Kaieteur News visited the scene on Tuesday, firefighters were working assiduously to contain the blaze before it could spread to nearby buildings.
When this publication arrived on the scene, residents had evacuated the burnt apartment building which was situated two doors away from the headquarters of DHL, a popular shipping company. As the firefighters worked to contain the blaze, DHL employees were seen removing what they described as important documents and consignment from their office. Residents and other curious onlookers stood helplessly as the fire raged through the building which was gutted in less than an hour. Kaieteur News understands that the building housed 57 rooms which were occupied by the Spanish-speaking residents. The Guyana Fire Service is working to determine cause of the fire.
