Pensioner held at knifepoint as former worker attempts rape in home invasion

(Kaieteur News) – A 66-year-old pensioner from Blairmont Settlement, West Bank Berbice, is struggling to come to terms with a harrowing home invasion during which a man she once trusted for construction work allegedly held her at knifepoint and attempted to rape her.

The woman, who lives alone in her two-storey home, recounted that the terrifying ordeal unfolded late Friday night, at around 23:20 hrs., after she was startled by her dogs barking downstairs. Initially dismissing the disturbance as noise from a nearby neighbour, she returned to bed only to be jolted moments later by a chilling encounter.

“About two to three minutes after, I just feel a wet hand on my face and a knife at my neck, and he tell me, ‘don’t make a sound… don’t shout… or I gon bore yuh,’” the visibly shaken woman recalled.

The voice, she said, was immediately recognisable. It belonged to a construction worker in his late 20s whom she had hired for about a month to build her fence. As he stood partially illuminated by light filtering into the darkened room, she confirmed his identity as his face was uncovered.

What followed was a desperate and prolonged struggle, as the pensioner clutched the hand holding the knife while pleading with him to leave. She offered him the small sum of cash she had on hand, approximately $4,000, but he refused.

“I tell he take the money… he say, ‘put it back, nah bother with that.’ So I ask he, ‘what you really come for? Yuh come to rape me?’”

According to the woman, the suspect then suggested they have a “nice time,” assuring her he would not harm her. Despite her repeated objections, he reportedly undressed himself and then forcibly stripped her, proceeding to fondle and kiss her while warning her to remain silent.

The traumatic encounter lasted more than an hour.

“He tell me, ‘for a big woman, yuh keep yuhself good,’ and he kissing me and touching me… I keep telling he stop,” she said.

The man allegedly attempted to rape her but was unsuccessful, becoming frustrated in the process. He then proposed a secret arrangement, suggesting he visit her weekly for sexual encounters. Fearing for her life, the woman said she pretended to agree in order to get him to leave.

After exiting the house, the suspect instructed her to return to her room. Once she was certain he had gone, the pensioner raised an alarm, alerting neighbours who quickly mobilised and searched the area, armed with cutlasses. However, the suspect had already fled.

The matter was reported to the Blairmont Police Station early Saturday morning, and the suspect was subsequently arrested. He remains in police custody as investigations continue.

The woman, a lifelong resident of the community and a mother of three, said she has never before experienced such a violation, even when leaving her home unattended. A widow for the past 14 years, she is now grappling with the emotional aftermath of the attack.

“He never show me no sign… he used to come and do he work normal,” she said, still trying to process the betrayal.
