(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Health is in the process of expanding dialysis services to patients living in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six with the construction of new dialysis centres in each region.
In an invitation for bids, the ministry will be constructing dialysis centres at Lima in Region Two, at De Kinderen in Region Three, at Diamond and at Enmore in Region Four, at Bath in Region Five and at No. 75 Village in Region Six.
It should be noted that these locations all have a brand-new Regional Hospital which were commissioned last year.
According to the tender notice, bids for the project are expected to open on April, 7, 2026 at the National Tender Board.
Dialysis is the treatment needed for persons whose kidneys are failing.
Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony speaking at a recent World Kidney Day Conference, highlighted the growing impact of chronic diseases in Guyana, particularly diabetes and hypertension, which are major contributors to kidney disease. He noted that the Ministry established a dedicated Chronic Disease Department in recent years to strengthen prevention, early detection, and treatment services across the country.
The Minister emphasised the importance of early testing and encouraged the public to utilise the Ministry’s health vouchers, which allow individuals to access important laboratory tests, including kidney function testing. These efforts have helped identify more persons at risk and support earlier intervention.
During his remarks, he also outlined ongoing initiatives to expand dialysis services and strengthen kidney care nationwide.
Additional dialysis machines are being placed in regional hospitals, while partnerships with non-governmental organisations and international institutions continue to support improved treatment and training, he stated.
Quoted by the Department of Public Information, the minister stated, “At the moment, some of the facilities where we have dialysis are operated with external partners…Going forward, we have been working to introduce dialysis in some of our public hospital.”
He said dialysis chairs will soon be placed in the six newly constructed hospitals. He added that 15 new dialysis machines will also be strategically placed in regional hospitals to broaden access to treatment.
Supporting patients, it was reported that the government increased financial assistance for dialysis patients to $600,000 annually. Previously, individuals received a one-off payment of $350,000 and were not eligible for further support. “That has changed,” Minister Anthony said, before stating that, “Now every year we are seeing a lot of persons coming forward to get assistance.”
Currently, some 650 patients are benefiting from the financial support, which allows them to choose their preferred dialysis provider.
The minister disclosed that the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is licensed to perform kidney transplants.
