Kaieteur News – The We Invest in Nationhood has express concerns outrage over reports of sexual assault involving a male teacher and nine schoolgirls at a city school.
In a statement WIN led by businessman, Azruddin Mohamed said: “These accusations represent a violation of the trust placed in educators, who are charged with both the education and well-being of children.” The party said while the teacher has been placed on administrative leave, there are reports that efforts were made by said teacher to contact the students involved and threatened them, which could further traumatise the victims and hinder the investigation.
“WIN calls for a full, independent investigation by the Guyana Police Force and the Child Care and Protection Agency. We further call for the involvement of the Board of Governors of the school. We also call for: counselling and support for all affected students; clear and timely communication between the authorities and the parents and a review of child protection policies and reporting systems in schools is needed to strengthen same.”
The party further states: “Our hearts are broken by such acts. We stand with the victims and their families and call on the Ministry of Education to act decisively and adopt these measures.
On Wednesday the Ministry of Education said it had moved swiftly to remove the teacher from the classroom following the serious allegations.
The action, the ministry said was taken in keeping with established procedures, as authorities began engaging parents and activating child protection mechanisms. According to the ministry the Welfare Department of the Department of Education met with one parent on Friday, 13 March 2026, a second parent on Monday, 16 March 2026, and a third parent on Tuesday, 17 March 2026. Each parent was issued a referral letter to the Child Protection Agency, consistent with standard operating procedures. Each affected student is to undergo a forensic interview to be conducted by Blossom Inc, the release added. To date, one such interview has been completed. “The Ministry of Education wishes to state unequivocally that, contrary to certain misleading claims circulating on social media, there has been no delay in the investigative process,” the release stated.
Meanwhile, speaking to Kaieteur News a source disclosed that the victims reportedly discussed their interactions with the teacher which led to the matter being reported and the Education Ministry was called in. The source stated that nine schoolgirls are reportedly involved.
This publication learned that the accused teacher is a Physical Education (PE) teacher and has been employed with the secondary school for some three years. Guyana recorded in excess of 300 sexual assault cases monthly last year.
