(Kaieteur News) – The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation recently hosted an advanced surgical mission led by internationally renowned reconstructive urologist Kurt McCammon, bringing specialised procedures and hands-on training to Guyana.
Professor McCammon, of Eastern Virginia Medical School, visited in February 2026 alongside fellow reconstructive urologist Nima Baradaran to lead a surgical workshop focused on strengthening advanced urological care at the hospital. During the mission, several patients underwent complex reconstructive procedures that are rarely available locally. Hospital officials said the operations significantly improved patients’ quality of life while also providing critical training opportunities for local surgeons and medical residents.
In a press statement the GPHC said urology is a specialised field of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the urinary tract in both men and women, as well as the male reproductive system. Urologists manage a wide range of conditions, including kidney stones, urinary tract infections, prostate disorders, bladder problems, and cancers of the urinary system.
The specialty also involves complex reconstructive procedures that restore normal urinary function and enhance patients’ quality of life. Through surgical and non-surgical treatments, urology plays a vital role in helping patients maintain healthy urinary and reproductive systems.
Working alongside the visiting specialists in the operating theatre, members of the GPHC urology team gained hands-on experience and technical guidance, enhancing the hospital’s ability to manage complex urological conditions.
Head of the Urology Section, Dr. Rajendra Sukhraj, expressed his appreciation to Professor McCammon and Dr. Baradaran for their ongoing commitment to supporting surgical training in Guyana and the broader Caribbean. He highlighted that such collaborations are essential for broadening local surgeons’ skills and improving patient outcomes.
Chief Executive Officer of GPHC, Mr. Robbie Rambaran, also met with the visiting team and praised their humanitarian efforts and dedication to advancing medical training. He emphasised the importance of international partnerships in enhancing the hospital’s capacity to provide specialised care to the Guyanese population. The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation remains dedicated to strengthening this valuable partnership as it continues to expand access to advanced urologic services and enhance the quality of care for patients across Guyana.
