(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works has announced that vending will not be permitted between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. along the Sheriff Street to Mandela Avenue corridor.
In a notice issued Monday, the ministry said it recognises the vibrant economic activity on Sheriff Street and its importance to the surrounding community. However, it noted that the restriction is necessary to keep the roadway safe and accessible during peak hours.
“To ensure that Sheriff Street remains safe and accessible for everyone during peak hours, the ministry is implementing a strict daytime clearance policy,” the notice stated.
Under the policy, all trucks, caravans and vending stalls must be removed between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., although vending will be allowed outside of those hours.
The ministry urged vendors to cooperate in keeping the thoroughfare clear during this period, warning that non-compliant stalls will be removed.
“Please note that to maintain order, the ministry will be required to remove any encumbrances found on-site during these hours. Therefore, any encumbrances found within the roadway or pedestrian pathways during these hours will be removed to maintain public order,” the ministry said.
The notice also clarified that no stalls or caravans are permitted on the road shoulders or reserves between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., from property line to property line on each side of the corridor.
This means that even caravans placed behind sidewalks or leaning against nearby fences must be removed daily during the restricted hours.
