(Kaieteur News) – Three months after the 13th Parliament was convened, the National Assembly on Monday finally moved to establish the long-awaited Committee of Selection, a critical parliamentary body responsible for determining the membership of all other standing and sectoral committees.
It ensures the composition of committees reflects the balance of parties in the Assembly.
During Monday’s sitting Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Gail Teixeira who is also a member of the committee presented the government nominees namely: Prime Minister Mark Phillips, Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustafa, Minister of Public Affairs, Kwame McCoy and Junior Local Government Minister, Pauline Sukhai.
From We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) the members are: Opposition Chief Whip, Tabitha Sarabo-Halley, Odessa Primus and Nandranie Singh. From A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) the members are: Ganesh Mahipaul and Dr. Terrence Campbell.
The committee is chaired by the Speaker and comprises nine members, with five from the government benches and four from the opposition. The selection committee nominates members for various Parliamentary Standing Committees; elects chairpersons and vice-chairpersons for Standing Committees and considers other matters referred to it by the National Assembly.
