(Kaieteur News) – With just days to go before opposition parliamentarians meet to elect a leader of the opposition, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) leader Azruddin Mohamed says he is “worried,” but on high alert amid what he claims are efforts by the governing People’s Progressive Party to destabilise his party and possibly prevent him from assuming the post of Opposition Leader.
Opposition MPs are scheduled to meet on Monday to elect a leader. WIN holds 16 seats in the National Assembly, followed by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) with 12 seats and the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) with one.
During a telephone interview with Kaieteur News on Friday, Mohamed linked his concerns to events surrounding the commencement of the 13th Parliament, which he described as part of a broader pattern of pressure and intimidation.
“Of course, I am worried because if you can recall on the October 31, I was arrested three days before the first sitting of the 13th parliament which was on the 3rd of November. So, everything was coincidental,” he said.
He added, “So I am worried, I am being very vigilant. I want the nation to be vigilant because anything is possible with this PPP dictatorship government and they are very desperate presently.”
Mohamed further alleged that contact has been made with relatives of WIN’s Members of Parliament (MPs). “Calls were made to family members of my MPs. Persons reached out to their families but my MPs they are standing strong,” he stated.
According to the WIN leader, “Approaches were made as of recent in the last two days, but I am confident in my MPs but I am on the lookout because anything is possible under this administration.”
His comments come against the backdrop of statements made earlier on Friday by APNU lead MP, Dr Terrence Campbell, who signaled that the party has no intention of challenging the post and is likely to abstain from voting. Campbell maintained that there will be only one nominee, Mohamed. He made those remarks at APNU’s press conference.
However, APNU Parliamentary Chief Whip Ganesh Mahipaul cautioned that developments could still occur before Monday, noting the unpredictability of politics.
“So, several things can happen between today and Monday…We are not shying away but there are possibilities of things can happen that is very much beyond us too because we don’t know necessarily what is happening in the People’s Progressive Party and what they are doing,” Mahipaul said at the press conference.
Mahipaul also referenced recent remarks by Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir and Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, S.C. During a live broadcast on Tuesday evening, Nadir said he has a duty to protect the integrity of the House and suggested that Mohamed’s possible election would tarnish Parliament, labelling him an “international fugitive.”
Nandlall, for his part, has said on multiple occasions that Mohamed being sanctioned by the United States and facing extradition proceedings would be unprecedented, deeply damaging and an indictment on Guyana.
