(Kaieteur News) – A 25-year-old gold miner of Port Kaituma, Region One was on Friday arrested after he assaulted a police constable.
Police in a statement on Saturday said that an investigation has been launched into “an alleged felonious wounding involving a Police Constable attached to the Port Kaituma Police Station, which occurred on Friday January 16, 2026 about 12:50hrs at the Port Kaituma Waterfront, North West District.”
Preliminary investigations revealed that police ranks were at the location to conduct enquiries into a separate matter when the miner began behaving in a disorderly manner. He was repeatedly warned to keep the peace, but ignored the warnings. It was during attempts to arrest the suspect, that the constable was assaulted and injured.
“The suspect was restrained, arrested and escorted to the Port Kaituma Police Station where he remains in custody assisting with the investigation. The Constable was examined and treated at the Port Kaituma Hospital and was subsequently discharged,” police said.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in the statement reminded the public that assaulting police in the lawful execution of their duties is an offence which would not be taken lightly.
