(Kaieteur News) – The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) has issued an Early Warning System (EWS) Level 3 – High-Priority Alert, following the discovery of cannabis vapes in Campbellville, Georgetown.
The products contain THC cannabis extracts, which are fully prohibited under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Cap. 10:10. In a release to the media CANU said that, “The cartridges were found in professionally packaged boxes labelled for medical use only”. It is important to note that such labels have no legal standing in Guyana and do not authorise possession or use. The colourful, youth-targeted packaging also raises significant public-health concern and heightens the likelihood of distribution among adolescents.”
On Thursday acting on intelligence received, officers attached to CANU conducted an operation in Campbellville Housing Scheme, Georgetown. The operation resulted in the discovery and seizure of several branded THC cannabis vapes.
CANU explained in its statement that this seizure is an indication that there is an emerging shift towards the importation of high potency cannabis concentrates being disguised as consumer vape products. Their packaging is professionally printed, colorful and designed in a youth appealing manner, therefore increasing the risk of rapid spread of circulation if it is not contained.
“Chemical composition and potential contaminants remain unknown, and samples have been earmarked for laboratory analysis. Under Guyana’s laws, these substances are 100% illegal regardless of packaging, branding, or foreign “medical use” labels,” CANU warned.
Under Guyana’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Cap. 10:10, cannabis and its derivatives are listed as controlled substances. This includes the cannabis plant, resin, extracts and tinctures, as well as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and any product containing the chemical. In this light the live resin, and the THC vape oil fall directly under cannabis resin and extracts which are prohibited and therefore the possession, sale or importation is illegal in Guyana.
It is important to note that, “The “for medical use only” labels on the boxes have no legal standing in Guyana and do not change the fact that the products are prohibited,” CANU urged. None of the labels are in accordance with the Guyana Food and Drug Department, any local licensing authority, GFSL testing or any legal cannabis framework in Guyana.
These types of vapes can have advert health effects as they expose users to high concentrations of THC and other unknown chemical additive, which can cause short term as well as long term health issues, as often time the product is unregulated or counterfeit, making the risk significantly higher.
“Guyana’s Early Warning System (EWS), housed within the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit, also identifies these THC cartridges as high-risk emerging threats, particularly to minors. The EWS tracks trends, packaging styles, chemical profiles, and trafficking patterns linked to concentrated cannabis products. Once flagged, the system issues alerts, guides frontline officers, and feeds actionable intelligence into national enforcement operations,” CANU added.
