(Kaieteur News) – A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Terrence Campbell, has firmly rejected President Irfaan Ali’s recent claim that Guyana is “awash” with money, emphasizing that the government has not been careful in its spending.
During a recent APNU press conference, Campbell responded to the President’s statement that the country’s financial resources must be used wisely. “Everything is relative. I would say that Guyana is awash with money compared to where we were 10 years ago. But on a global scale, I do not consider Guyana to be awash with money. And I support that we need careful spending, but careful spending is not what we have seen in this government,” Campbell stated.
He went on to highlight several examples of mismanaged funds, such as the billions of Guyanese dollars poured into infrastructural projects that are already showing signs of disrepair. Additionally, he pointed to the ongoing Gas-to-Energy project, which, according to Campbell, has only seen substantial investment in feasibility studies while costs have exceeded initial estimates. “We have seen the execution of numerous infrastructural projects that are already crumbling. We have seen the gas-to-energy project, over $1 billion over initial estimates. This government with our oil windfall, and there is a long-term threat to oil, and we have seen it this year,” he said.
Campbell stressed the need for a more prudent approach to the nation’s finances, especially in light of the country’s significant oil revenues. “It is important that we be prudent in how we invest those oil resources. It is important that we be prudent in saving for hard times, economic shocks. It is important that we be prudent in leaving money for future generations. This government has failed miserably,” he said. He further criticized the President’s comments, stating, “I think the President should be the last person to speak about us prudently spending the money that he claims that we are awash with.”
The APNU party also issued a statement, condemning the President’s recent speech as reflecting a troubling pattern. “The President’s address reinforces a troubling pattern: a wish list framed as a plan, announcements detached from performance, and ambition unmoored from accountability. After five years of unprecedented oil revenues, Guyanese deserve quality, honesty, and delivery—not recycled promises,” the party stated. They further added, “Five years of oil revenues have not produced a commensurate improvement in the quality of life for the average citizen. Vision without honest self-assessment is not leadership; it is political marketing set to confine citizens to the inadequacy of the government.”
