(Kaieteur News) – A scuffle involving two minors which began over a bicycle has resulted in the death of a nine-year-old boy of Kildonan Village, Corentyne. Berbice.
Levon Collins, of Kildonan Primary, died on Saturday at the New Amsterdam Hospital, nearly two weeks later, reportedly from the injuries incurred from a bicycle hitting him in his stomach.
At the home of the family, Collins’mother was too emotional to speak. Other family members informed this publication that a 15-year-old female cousin of the dead child was the one who, during the fight with him, dealt him several slaps to which he retaliated.
His aunt, Lottie Collins, told Kaieteur News that on November 12, the child who lived not too far away, came to her home to borrow a bicycle. That bicycle had a slackened chain link, but she said that her nephew persisted, and he collected it and went on his way. Within 15 minutes, she said saw him making his way back with the cousin in question, called Ne Ne, trying to push him and the bike as he resisted.
“Whilst coming back with the bicycle, I ain’t know what transpired….Levon coming back and like she was pushing Levon, and Levon said he ain’t want nobody push he. She said ‘come let me push you’, Levon said no…..and like she push Levon and like Levon lash she back,” the aunt recalled.
The young girl, she said, grew angry and began “roughing up her nephew” while demanding to push the bicycle against his wishes, as the two made their way towards her (the aunt’s) home.
She stated that two of her nieces frantically alerted her that “somebody ah beat up Levon,” but she didn’t take it seriously and did not attend the matter immediately, but instructed another nephew to check the situation. She then confronted the child’s cousin minutes after, who she said responded with aggression when asked why she assaulted Levon, and continued on her way.
“When Levon do reach to the yard now with the bicycle, Levon hold on to his stomach and bare slime out he mouth, and he is crying and coughing. He take a while before he could’ve (explained what) transpired.”
According to what her now dead nephew related, ‘Ne Ne’ was insisting on pushing the bicycle despite his objection, which led to a fight with the two during which she threw the said bicycle at him.
Throughout the rest of the day, he began crying out for stomach aches, and his grandfather took him to Port Mourant Hospital, where he received injections and saline. An x-ray exam did not yield much, but doctors confirmed that the child indeed had sustained a strong impact to his stomach. Days after, he was admitted to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
The heartbroken aunt shared that when she got to the hospital to visit him Saturday last, but did not get to see him alive. Her sister, the mother of the child, told her in tears that he died in her arms.
Upon venturing into the room, she stated that the child’s bed was blood-soaked. Images seen by this publication confirmed same.
His grandfather, Compton Collins, expressed frustration that the family is yet to have a definite cause of death. The reality of his grandson’s death, he stated, is already too harsh, but to not be handed a direct cause denies them any little closure.
“I always keep him close. I’m very hurt to know that I lost him. Is best me din dead before he dead. I’m not satisfied. The doctor ain’t give us anything up to now,” he vented.
His mother, Loretta Collins, conveyed her perplexity and shock at the bizarre boldness of his cousin, who she said passed by the home and throw hints regarding her departed son. She shared too that the young lady was sent home from school on multiple occasions for overly unacceptable behavior.
