Kaieteur Sports – A contingent of four top Draught players left the shores destined for Trinidad & Tobago to participate in an International Draughts Open Championship from September 26 to October 6.
The Tournament will attract players from over 22 countries, where the grand showdown will take place at the Metro Hotel, Southern Main Road, Couva. Former Grand Master International Alexander Shvartsman and other prominent Draught Icons would be part of the action. Draught players are in for a treat as Trinidad and Tobago promised to showcase their vibrant culture and hospitality to all participants.
The four players from Guyana are: Jiaram, who is the president of the Association. Jiaram has an FMJD rating, having played in the last PANAM in Costa Rica. He won many local competitions, including the National Championships. He also had several international outings and is leading the Guyana contingent.
Floyd Cumberbatch, who hails from Linden, is another aggressive player who is much relied on. This would be Floyd’s first international outing, and he hopes to secure an FMJD rating. Floyd has won several National Championship matches locally.
Dr. Ivor Burnett English, President of Transport Sports Club, is expected to have a test exposure to international Draughts. Dr. English has secured places in local competitions and is expected to live up to expectations.
Ravi Rampersaud, a Guyanese who resides in Grenada, but supports our local federation. Ravi played unbeaten in his last tournament in Guyana. Ravi will join the team in Trinidad and Tobago. He is expected to do well in his games since he is practicing with top players in Grenada. Ravi has secured sponsorship from the local company Tokyo Motors to print jerseys for the players.
