Kaieteur News – Bai, every week now is a new price shock. Is like the shopkeepers playing “Guess Who Crying First?” with consumers. Yuh go in for a pint of oil, by the time yuh reach de counter, yuh money done.
Dem boys remember when $1,000 could full a market bag. Now $1,000 full a lil plastic bag – and not even a big one – with half a cabbage, two ochro, and a lil breeze from de stall.
Dem hire car man dem charging fare like dem running limousine service. A short drop used to be $300; now is $800. And de driver still vex if yuh ain’t give he de extra $200 “for gas.” Dem boys seh, if this trend continue, is cheaper to buy a bicycle – but wait, bicycle price gone up too.
De poultry farmers get all kinda concession – cheap feed, tax break, even moral support – but chicken price still climb like it got ambition to reach Mount Everest. Cooking oil? That one running faster than Usain Bolt.
And de Vee Pee seh de government helping with cost of living. Dem boys seh, yes, they helping – helping de shopkeepers to sell more expensive. Government put more money in people pocket, but is like pouring water in a basket. De more come in, de faster it gone.
Dem boys seh, if de Vee Pee really want to know how bad it get, he got to leave de SUV, take off de sunglasses, and walk in Bourda Market with a shopping list. Let he ask for brown rice, milk powder, and chicken, and see if he don’t clutch he chest like is heartburn.
At this rate, dem boys seh, we might have to start a new tourism slogan: Visit Guyana – Where It Cheaper to Live Abroad.
