Kaieteur News – A 23-year-old farmer, on Thursday, was remanded to prison after being charged with murder.
The accused, Saif Majid of Lot 491 Lima Sands, Essequibo Coast, appeared before Magistrate Tamieka Clarke at the Suddie Magistrates’ Court where the charge was read to him.
Majid is accused of killing 46-year-old Gary Melville called ‘Tonna’ of Lima Sands, Essequibo Coast. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until July 29, 2025. It was reported that Melville died between 20:00h and 05:30h on June 27, 2025.
“Enquiries disclosed that the now-deceased man and the suspect were friends and both resided in the same area,” police said.
A female shopkeeper told investigators that the suspect, along with the victim and others went to the shop, where they drank alcohol. The woman said that the suspect was drinking a bottle of High Wine while the victim was drinking 592 beers. They were both seated at the same table.
The shopkeeper said she overheard the suspect complaining that Melville burnt him with a cigarette after which she saw the two men in a scuffle. Shortly thereafter, the shopkeeper said she saw the suspect bleeding from his head and the victim on the ground.
Another female in the shop intervened and ‘parted’ the two men. Melville was then seen walking in a northern direction after leaving the shop.
About ten minutes later, the suspect hopped on his motorcycle and left in the same direction as Melville.
At around 05:30hrs on Saturday, a 48-year-old woman from the area was walking on the Lima Sands public road when she saw Melville lying motionless on the eastern side of the road. She raised an alarm and the police were summoned.
Majid was arrested on June 28, 2025.
