Kaieteur News – A 29-year-old construction worker was reportedly shot dead during a police chase on Second Street, Foulis, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Sunday evening.

Dead is Rondell Clarke of Lot 413 Foulis, ECD.

It was reported that the incident occurred between 19:30 and 19:45 hrs.

According to a police report, Clarke was allegedly shot by a 25-year-old male security officer employed with a private security service, but family members believe it was a bullet that was fired by the police.

“The security officer allegedly shot Clarke. Clarke was later picked up in a conscious state by police ranks and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for medical attention,” police said.

They further noted that Clarke was admitted to the critical surgical bay and was later pronounced dead. The body was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Cooperation (GPHC) mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.

During an interview with Kaieteur News, the deceased’s sister, Sherifa Clarke, shared concerns over the lack of clarity surrounding the circumstances of her brother’s death.

The woman explained that after being informed of the incident, the family visited multiple police stations along the east coast including Sparendaam, Vigilance, Enmore, and Cove and John, only to be told at each location that no official report had been made regarding the shooting, as a result, the family formed a protest outside the Cove and John police station after which they were assisted.

Sherifa told this publication that while at Cove and John police station, they began inquiring about the incident and were told that Clarke was shot at First Street, Foulis, at the Chinese supermarket.

Working with that information, the family went to the supermarket which was closed. However, they were able to contact the resident who told them that the incident did not occur there and that the security who works there does not work with gun.

The family returned to the police station where they were updated that Clarke was shot on Second Street, Foulis. Upon their arrival they did not see anything and decided to return to the station.

“While we were going to the station, we saw a vehicle coming in, and we decided to turn around and followed that vehicle and it was a police vehicle. And it stopped at the same spot where he died, how we know that, is because we saw the blood there and his glasses was there,” Sherifa told Kaieteur News.

Sherifa said the family questioned the officer who identified himself as Officer Ross. She said Ross claimed he did not know anything about the incident, but was instructed to escort the person for medical attention.

“We ask him if it was a chase and he said no it was a security guard that shot him and the gun and the security is in custody that’s all they know. We even had a protest at Cove and John and that is when the commander came out, and other police ranks came out and listen to us,” Sherifa added.

She said the family obtained three video footages showing that Clark was being chased by a police vehicle. According to her, Officer Ross had a personal vendetta with her brother.

“My brother and that police officer have a personal issue with each other. Whenever the police see Clark on his bike, he would target him. He was never wanted for nothing because he was not involved in any crime. The only unlawful thing he would do is ride his bike without a helmet,” she said.
