Kaieteur Sports- The Guyana Mixed Martial Arts Federation (GYMMA) has ushered in a new era of leadership with the successful hosting of its Emergency General Elections on April 12, at the upper floor of Palm Court in Georgetown.
Businessman Michael Singh, who also leads the Guyana Basketball Federation, was elected to serve the combat sport until 2028, which marked a pivotal moment in the Federation’s evolution and the continued rise of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in Guyana.
The elections saw full participation from all registered and recognized member clubs, including the Academy of Contemporary Martial Arts (ACMA), John Campayne Mixed Martial Arts Academy (JCMA), 3 RYU Karate Club, White Tiger Martial Arts, and the Guyana Police Force Mixed Martial Arts team.
Described as a transparent and democratic process, the election was overseen by Jason Fraser, Vice President of the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF), and President of the Pan-American Confederation, ensuring the credibility and integrity of the electoral proceedings.
Singh will have the experienced Roland Fanfair as his First Vice President, Alyer Williams as the body’s second Vice President, and Dr Sawan Jagnarain, who will serve as Third Vice President.
Rebecca Ganesh was elected as the General Secretary, while the GYMMA’s new treasurer is Ryan Kirton. The Technical Director is John Campayne.
The formation of the new executive body comes at a time when MMA in Guyana is experiencing rapid growth.
The sport has gained popularity among youth and martial arts practitioners nationwide, driven by increased exposure to international competitions, dedicated local clubs, and the Federation’s commitment to standardizing the sport in alignment with IMMAF guidelines.
GYMMA has been instrumental in developing a competitive and structured environment for athletes, with the ultimate goal of representing Guyana on regional and international stages.
The newly elected leadership has pledged to continue building on this momentum by enhancing athlete development, increasing public awareness, and securing opportunities for international participation.
With a renewed vision and a dynamic team at the helm, the future of Mixed Martial Arts in Guyana looks promising.
The GYMMA stated that they remains committed to fostering discipline, and national pride through one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.
